Marais Poitevin - Angles centre angles marais 5 Marais 4 Marais 2 Chateau marais arriere_eglise15

Angles sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Estuary of the river Lay; it is a dynamic town both socially and economically (shops, restaurants, bars, banks..) and  provides healthy and/or fun activities to fill your day.
In summer, Angles propose a varied cultural programme; you will like to visit its market, stroll and discover the Marais Poitevin or check out the car boot sales.

Strolling through Angles, you will discover and marvel at the stone built houses with their almost flat roofs and their blue shutters, the narrow streets we call "venelles";  this typical architecture of the regions makes the charm of our  town. It is even more so during summer when the sun shines and gilds the limestone walls, Angles then resembles a Provence town with all its flowers in full bloom and full of vivid colours.

Angles Heritage is quite rich: The Moriq Tower which is the dungeon of an ancient fortress, was built in 1435 and used to watch over  the estuary of the river Lay. The church Notre Dames des Anges (Our Lady of the Angels)  is particularly interesting with its mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles; the stone Bear at the top of the Church front, was inspired by the legend of the evil beast which used to feed from the young girls' beauty. The "Octroi" pavilion is built on the Canal des Bourrasses and its purpose was to collect taxes on the commodities used for local consumption.

The seaside: Angles is only 7 kms away from the seaside where more fun activities await you; you will be delighted with the large and long sandy beaches of the Vendée coastline. To the West, Les Conches: there the water sport enthusiasts will enjoy the waves. To the South, the seaside resort of La Tranche Sur Mer is more family orientated;  there is something for all: children, teenagers and parents.

The Marais Poitevin, also called "The Green Venice" is the French second largest marshland stretching from Niort to the Ocean, between Vendée and Charentes Maritimes. Enjoy a leisurely walk, or cycle to discover its very rich and varied flora and wildlife; you can hire a traditional flat bottomed punt like boat  or a canoe to travel the Marais Poitevin network of canals and waterways.
